About the Position
The Mechanic has day-to-day responsibility to diagnose, repair, and maintain all fleet and equipment components, including gasoline and diesel engines, electric motors, and specialized maintenance equipment in the mechanic shop and the field as necessary. Repairs vary and include major repairs to engines, transmission, brakes, hydraulic, and other key systems. The Mechanic must stay up to date with Department of Transportation regulations and any relevant Federal, State, and local laws. Under the direction of a supervisor, this position may serve as a lead on specific job tasks.
Essential Job Functions
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Mechanic will:
- Perform skilled mechanical work in the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a variety of large and small vehicles and equipment, including gasoline, diesel, and electric motors and equipment.
- Evaluate maintenance, servicing, and repair needs of the City’s vehicles.
- Read and interpret schematics and diagrams.
- Inspect and diagnose mechanical malfunctions.
- Provide guidance and training to other Division employees as needed.
- Fabricate specialized equipment and tools.
- Perform routine maintenance, safety checks, and inspections.
- Change oil, transmission, brake, and other fluids according to prescribed procedures, and ensure compliance with laws, rules, and regulations regarding the disposal of hazardous waste.
- Repair cooling, fuel, electrical, and exhaust systems; tune engines using standard testing equipment.
- Make basic repairs of motors, transmissions, differentials, chassis parts, electrical, fuel, ignition, cooling, steering, and hydraulic and air systems, including proper testing and adjustments.
- Operate a variety of specialized electronic diagnosis equipment and machinery including a computer.
- Observe safe work methods and make appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
- Provide onsite, after-hours, on-call response to the fleet, streets, facilities, and ground infrastructure emergencies.
- Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.
- Monitor equipment and supplies. Research and recommend the purchase of parts and tools as needed.
- Maintain records on maintenance and repair work performed.
- Operate equipment to test the functionality of mechanical components as necessary.
- Learn and apply emerging technologies as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized, and timely manner.

Qualifications Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Two (2) years of responsible experience performing routine repair of automobiles, trucks, or power-driven equipment.
- Possession of a valid Class B Washington State Commercial driver’s license at the time of hire with an Abstract Driving Record from the WA State DOL acceptable to the City.
- Any combination of education and experience that would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the duties associated with the position.

- Techniques, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the overhaul, servicing, and preventive maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Operation, theory, and principles of gasoline and diesel engines.
- Methods, equipment, tools, and materials used in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnostic procedures for vehicles and equipment.
- Technical aspects of analog and digital electronic equipment installed in vehicles.
- Operation, maintenance, and calibration of a wide variety of equipment, hand, shop, and power tools used in the work.
- Basic troubleshooting and repair principles and practices.
- Safe work methods and safety practices pertaining to the work.
- Safe driving rules and practices.
- Standard office practices and procedures, including the use of standard office equipment, basic record-keeping, and arithmetic.
- English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with stakeholders.
Requires the ability to:
- Diagnose and repair a variety of mechanical and electrical problems of vehicles and equipment.
- Perform air system repairs.
- Perform engine and transmission overhauls.
- Perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on Caterpillar equipment.
- Read and comprehend instruction manuals, diagrams, and schematics.
- Fabricate special bodies, parts, and essentials as necessary.
- Locate and diagnose engine and other operating defects; use electronic and mechanical shop diagnostic equipment.
- Accurately estimate time, materials, and supplies necessary to complete repairs.
- Operate, service, and perform preventative maintenance and repair on a variety of automobiles, trucks, and equipment.
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate a variety of hand, power, and shop tools and mechanical equipment required for the work.
- Procure and maintain shop inventory, parts, materials, and supplies.
- Respond to emergency calls and/or perform after-hours assignments as directed.
- Interpret, apply, explain, and ensure compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
- Make accurate arithmetic calculations.
- Organize work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.
- Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with stakeholders.
